Morning Bid: Some payback, but bonds hug gains on oil
  + stars: | 2023-11-07 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +5 min
The oil price slide was helped by signs from Israel that it's open to pauses in the Gaza fighting. The typically hawkish Minneapolis Fed boss Neel Kashkari insisted it was still too early to take another rate hike off the table. Elsewhere, the Reserve Bank of Australia raised its policy interest rate again, as expected, by another quarter point to a 12-year high of 4.35%. Overall, the global stocks picture reflected some of the cooling of last week's rally and some of the China export numbers. The recent sharp drawdown in stocks presents a buying opportunity for those stocks that are positioned to withstand a double whammy of higher interest rates and an economic slowdown, according to Goldman Sachs. "Although we expect headwinds to discount rates and balance sheets to persist, we would view a substantial further downgrade to the growth outlook as a buying opportunity," David Kostin, Goldman's chief U.S. equity strategist, said in a note to clients. Therefore, Goldman believes many cyclical stocks, or those with a high sensitivity to the economy, shouldn't suffer. "We therefore remain wary of long-duration and highly levered stocks but think investors should treat cyclical sell-offs as a buying opportunity," Kostin said. Energy stocks Devon Energy and Patterson-UTI Energy also made the list.

While we don't own companies as mergers-and-acquisition plays, the potential for more tie-ups could have significant implications for our remaining oil name: Coterra Energy (CTRA). Chevron's market cap is around $324 billion, while ConocoPhillips is worth roughly $152 billion, based on Thursday's stock prices. Companies in this basket could include Coterra, Devon Energy (DVN) and Diamondback Energy (FANG). Coterra is valued at roughly $22.4 billion Thursday, while Devon and Diamondback are valued at $31.7 billion and $30.5 billion, respectively. The shift has generally been positive for the stock prices of oil companies.

Dealmaking in the U.S. oil and gas patch has picked up pace as producers sought to replenish their inventory after years of under-investment. The most-prized targets for Chevron could be Coterra Energy (CTRA.N) or Devon Energy (DVN.N), he added. Others mentioned included Matador Resources (MTDR.N), Permian Resources (PR.N) and Diamondback Energy (FANG.O). Still, the Exxon deal, the industry's largest since 2016, also set off worries about stiff regulatory scrutiny over anti-competitive concerns. Exxon does not anticipate antitrust hurdles to complete the deal, expected by early 2024.

Oil and natural gas prices traveled divergent paths this week, resulting in a mixed picture for the Club stocks Coterra Energy (CTRA) and Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD). In Thursday's session alone, natural gas prices jumped nearly 7%, as traders reacted to U.S. government data that showed a smaller-than-expected storage build. For the week, through Thursday's settle, natural gas has climbed 8.1%, building on last week's 11% advance. Natural gas on Friday morning jumped another 1.5%. Coterra's revenues are roughly a 50-50 split between oil and natural gas.

If oil prices stay high — and especially, if they breach $100 a barrel — the companies are well positioned. However, should oil prices fall and debt levels continue to rise, some companies have boxed themselves into a corner with very generous dividends and share repurchase programs. At the same time, operating cash flow has been declining. "What we're looking at is companies trying to bridge a little gap while operating cash flow is going down," said Mark Young, senior analyst at Evaluate Energy. "Since the end of 2020, operating cash flow has been able to cover all capital spending, dividend payments and share buybacks by itself.

Cheap stocks to buy after the worst sell-off in months

After the worst sell-off in months, CNBC Pro sought to find stocks trading at deeply discounted levels that could pay off for investors buying for the long term. Fears of longer-than-expected interest rate hikes hammered down on stocks this week. Citigroup last week trimmed its price target on Devon Energy by $2 to $55 and maintained its buy rating. Other energy names Eversource and Atmos , both in the red for the year, are also trading at significant discounts. Recent highs in oil prices have driven bullish sentiment on energy stocks.

REUTERS/Angus Mordant/File PhotoAug 1 (Reuters) - Shale producers Pioneer Natural Resources Co (PXD.N) and Devon Energy Corp (DVN.N) on Tuesday tightened budgets and warned of lower drilling and completions activity in coming months after a drop in oil and gas prices slashed their second-quarter profits. U.S. shale producers have been forced to reduce the number of rigs in operation and delay well completions as profits have fallen from bumper 2022 levels after crude prices eased from multi-year highs.
